4,300 Meals
Monthly

Situation Overview

Swiss Relief Association with the collaboration of Foundation Cottolengo, have launched two food banks in Quito, Ecuador which provide approx. 4,300 meals monthly to range of people varying from school children to adults. This has a significant impact on the North Quito community, as no other food bank in the neighborhood has such capacity. The primary food bank focuses on providing daily school meals, which secures children remain in school rather than going to find a job to feed themselves. Whilst our secondary food bank focuses on providing grocery supply bags to families twice a week. These efforts are made to create an positive impact on struggling families and individuals which cannot cope with the financial demands. Removing the financial strain on whether there will be a meal, allows them to focus on their education and peruse other opportunities.

This is our association’s flagship project which is expected to double the meals capacity by Q2 2023 to provide 8,600 meals monthly to wider pool of people within the community. Our Director of Operations, Paolo is in charge of overseeing the project with the assistance of project coordinator Deon. Introduction

Our charity is dedicated to combatting famine and malnutrition in Ecuador. We operate two food banks that serve a critical need in the local community. The first food bank provides weekly food bags to families in need, containing enough food to last for a week. The second food bank serves daily lunches to young students who may not have access to sufficient nutrition, should our foodbank not be there.

In total, we provide 4,300 meals per quarter to those in need in Ecuador. Our goal is to make a meaningful difference in the lives of those we serve, and to do our part in the fight against malnutrition and hunger in the country. We are thankful for the support of our donors, volunteers, and partners, without whom we could not do the important work that we do.

In total, we provide 4,300 meals per quarter to those in need in the community with our two foodbanks – the biggest foodbanks in all of Northern Quito.

By addressing the immediate need for food and nutrition, we are able to help alleviate the burden of hunger and allow people to focus on other aspects of their lives. We are grateful for the opportunity to make a positive impact in the lives of those we serve and are committed to continuing this pivotal help to the community in the future.”

Relieving local community

Our charity is committed to not only fighting famine and malnutrition, but also to being environmentally sustainable. Therefore, we have made the switch to reusable food bags for our weekly distributions. Not only do these bags reduce waste and contribute to a more sustainable future, but they also empower the individuals and families we serve to play a role in protecting the environment. By returning the bags to us each week, they are able to do their part in reducing their own carbon footprint and helping to preserve natural resources. We believe that sustainability is an important aspect of our mission, and are constantly looking for ways to reduce our impact on the environment. The switch to reusable food bags is just one example of this commitment. We are proud to be able to make a difference in the lives of those we serve, while also doing our part to protect the planet for future generations.

In addition to providing immediate support through the distribution of food and meals, our charity is also committed to building resilience in the communities we serve in Ecuador. We recognize that hunger and malnutrition are often symptoms of deeper issues, and strive to address these underlying causes in order to create long-term, sustainable solutions. One way we do this is through our weekly food bag distribution program. By providing families with a consistent supply of nutritious food, we are helping to improve their overall health and well-being. This not only helps to alleviate hunger in the short-term, but also has long-term benefits, such as increased productivity and improved educational outcomes for children.

We are also committed to working with local partners and community leaders to identify and address the root causes of hunger and malnutrition in the region. Through education and capacity-building programs, we aim to empower individuals and communities to take control of their own well-being and build a more resilient future.”
